THE SEED GERMINATION AND STERILE CULTURE OF ORCHIDS
Chou Young-jen, (Shanghai Institute of Plant Physiology, Academia Sinica)
The sophisticated problem of seed germination of orchids has beenreviewed. The difficulty of the germination of orchid seeds was overcomeby the technique of symbiotic and non-symbiotic germination since the earlytwentieth century. The metheds of non-symbiotic germination and cultivation of orchids aredescribed in drtail including the harvest and storage treatment of seeds, surface sterilization, culture medium, sowing and condition of cultivation, etc. There are also inhibition factors involved in the mature seeds of certainspcies,SO that the germinat ion percentage of many mature seeds are very10W.It is possible to use the immature seed in order to improve the seedgermination. In addition, the problems of overcoming the germination diffi-culty in certain orchid specie S are al so discussed.
