EFFECTS OF OZONE ON POLLEN GERMINATION AND ON GROWTH OF POLLEN TUBES OF HORTICULTURAL PLANTS

Wang Xunling Men Xiaotang (Department of Biology,Lanzhou University,Lanzhou 730000)  
Forsythia suspensa,F.giraldiana,Prunus armeniaca,P.Persica var versicolor, five cultivars of Malus pumila and four eultivars of pyrus pyrifolia were exposed to ozone at the concentrations of 0.37ppm and 1.02ppm for 1—5hrs.The rate of pollen germination and growth of pollen tubes deereased often fumigation.The inhibiting effect appeared to be diff- erent among different species.Some rate of pollen germination declined to 12% leve and the elongation of pollen tubes was only 6.51% of control The effect of ozone on pollen may be one of the important reasons for droping in the yeilds of crops and horticultural plants.The sen- sitivities of pollen to ozone can be considered as an index to monitor ozone in ambient air.
