PETROGRAPHIC FEATURES AND CLASSIFICATION OF DONG UJIMQIN AND WEIYUAN MESOSIDERITES

Two Chinese mesosiderites, the Deng Ujimqin and Weiyuan meteorites, werepetrographically studied. The Deng Ujimqin mesosiderite was classified as type Ⅰ andthe Weiyuan mesosiderite as type Ⅲ, based on degree of recrystallization of theirsilicate matrix. The Deng Ujimqin mesosiderite consists mainly of orthopyroxene-richclasts in fine-grained matrix and Fe-Ni metal. Silicate matrix shows slightlyrecrystallization. The Weiyuan mesosiderite is very heavily weathered. It consistsmainly of orthopyroxene, plagioclase with minor augite, stanfieldite, silicate andweathered products. The silicates of type Ⅲ show extensive recrystallization anddevelopment of poikiloblastic plagioclase crystals, and have a medium-coarse grainedgabbroic-granular texture. The cosmic-ray exposure ages are 151 Ma for the DongUjimqin mesosiderite and 18.6 Ma for the Weiyuan mesosiderite. These ages representthe time of individual mesosiderites excavated from the mesosiderite parent bodies.
