Spatial statistics for cadmium, mercury and lead contents in topsoil of Nanjing

The application of spatial analysis based on geographical information system (GIS) to environmental geochemistry is studied. Spatial analysis methods, including geostatistics and spatial autocorrelation, are used for cadmium, mercury and lead contents in topsoil samples of the study area with an area of 2 500 km2 and comprising the city of Nanjing and the suburbs around it. Different spatial autocorrelations are detected by Morans I for the three noxious elements. The results of geostatistics show that all the elements have good spatial structures and their variograms could be fitted by spherical models with nuggets. Cadmium and mercury have different features of anisotropy, while isotropy was observed for lead. It is believed that these spatial distribution features for the elements provide information about pollutants diffusing in the environment.
