Key issues of the formation and evolution of the Moon

LIN Yang-ting(Key Laboratory of the Earth's Deep Interior,Institute of Geology and Geophysics,Chinese Academy of Sciences,Beijing 100029,China)
China's lunar exploration is in progress. The results will help us to learn more about the composition, structure, origin and evolution of the Moon, and to reveal early history of the Earth. This review paper is focused on several key issues of the lunar origin and evolution,in order to inspire study of the Moon in China. These issues include the giant impact hypothesis of the Earth-Moon system, lunar magma ocean and formation of the lunar crust, later heavy bombardment, eruption of basalts and the lunar interior structure, and formation of the south pole Aitken basin.
