Lunar surface environment and properties of lunar soil:A review

Knowledge in lunar surface environment and properties of lunar soil is significant for lunar exploration and lunar science research,and it has been progressed in recent years. This paper reviews the lunar topography and physiognomy,the thermal environment,and the properties of lunar soil,and points out certain scientific issues to be highly concerned. Three important scientific issues related to lunar surface environment and properties of lunar soil are discussed,and they are (1) the effect of lunar topography on the quantitative remote sensing,chronology and the formation as well as evolution of South Pole Aitken (SPA) basin,(2) further exploration and comprehensive studies on the thermal environment of lunar surface,the properties of thermal emission,the physical temperature and the heat flow,and their responses to the change of the Earth's albedo,and (3) the formation,evolution,and the space weathering effect of lunar soil,the mechanism of hydrogen enrichment,the exploration of water ice in lunar poles,and the utilization of lunar resources.
