The R0 values (vitrinite reflectance) obtained on the TTI model and on the chemical kinetic model are compared, and their implications in the evolution of oilmatuation for the northern shelf of South China Sea are discussed. The R0 value obtained based on the TTI model is not consistent with that on the chemical kinetic model. The depth of oil threshold resulting from the kinetic model is shallower than that from the TTI model. The difference between them increases with increasing heating rate, and the increasing order of the difference for the western area of northern shelf of South China Sea is as follows: Beibuwan Basin─Jusan Depression─Yingqiong Basin.
