CARBON ISOTOPIC COMPOSITIONS AND ORIGIN OF INDIVIDUAL FATTY ACIDS IN MODERN SEDIMENTS

Carbon isotopic compositions of individual fatty acids from modern sediments of the Nansha Sea and southern Gansu Marsh were for the first time reported. The results show that the saturated fatty acids with different carbon number differ significantly with each other in carbon isotopic composition, as well as in the origin.The light carbon isotopic compositions of C(14:0) and C(15:0) saturated fatty acids probably originated from the lipids of chemoautotrophic bacteria. The C(16:0) and C(18:0) saturated fatty acids from marine sediments are similar to the plankton lipids in carbon isotopic compositions, indicating the former may have been derived from the latter.Also the similarity of carbon isotopic compositions between the long chain saturated fatty acids (C20:0─C26:0) and the higher plant lipids suggests a genetic link between them. This study demonstrates the potential of carbon isotopic compositions of individual saturated fatty acids as a source indicator.
