APPLICATION OF BORON ISOTOPE GEOCHEMISTRY TO WATER-ROCK INTERACTION SYSTEM

This paper gives a thorough review of geochemical studies on boron isotope systems in natural materials, with an emphasis on boron isotope geochemistry of fluid-rock interaction systems. Boron is largely enriched in the crust (10× 10(-6)) and ocean (4.5× 10(-6)), because of its high incompatibility of most major rock-forming minerals and solubility in aqueous solution. The boron isotopic compositions show a big variation, ranging from δ(11)B=-32‰to +58‰, but form a narrow cluster of values for specific rock types. Boron isotopic fractionation mostly results from the pH and water / rock ratio change in the fluid-rock interaction system. The special geochemical featurs of B have been applied to tracing the geochemical processes, expecially those involving fluid-rock interaction.
