CHEMICAL BEHAVIOUR OF SOLID PHASES DURING PARTIAL MELTING AND FACIES TRANSITION (SPINEL→PLAGIOCLASE)OF MANTLE PERIDOTITE──Ⅱ.APPLICATION IN NATURAL ROCKS

Variation in chemical compositions of minerals in some representative spinel-and plagioclase-peridotites around the world were analysed.It has been found that in plagioclase-peridotite spinel and orthopyroxene are rich in Ti and Ti content increases with the increase of Cr/(Cr+Al); clinopyroxene is rich in Ti and poor in Na, and Ti increases with the decrease of Na. On the basis of these features and experimental results, it may be concluded that most of plagioclase-peridotite over the world did not undergo partial melting in the plagioclase stability field. The partial melting undergone by plagioclase-peridotite occurred only within spinel or garnet facies. Their relative degrees of melting may be estimated from two indicators.(l) Cr/(Cr+Al) of the most Ti-poor spinel; (2) the maximum Na content of clinopyroxene. With respect to spinel-peridotite, from lherzolite, harzburgite to dunite,Cr/(Cr+Al) of spinel and orthopyroxene increases gradually, but Ti and Na contents, which are very low, remain unchanged or decrease a little. The relative degree of melting of spinel-peridotite may be estimated from the Cr/(Cr+Al) ratio of spinel and the Na content of clinopyroxene.
