CHEMICAL STRUCTURES OF BRANCHED ALKANES IDENTIFIED IN JURASSIC COALS AND COAL-RELATED MUDSTONES FROM THE TURPAN-HAMI BASIN AND THEIR GEOCHEMICAL SIGNIFICANCE

Several series of mid mono-and dimethyl-branched alkanes have been detected in Jurassic coals and mudstones from the Turpan-Hami Basin,north-western China.The monomethyl alkanes distribute in a wide range of carbon number C 17 —C 31 ,and predominantly within C 18 —C 25 .The structural isomers of the same carbon-number is dominant in a complex series of mid monomethyl branched alkanes,which are probably of cyanobacteria origin.The preservation of bacterial lipids requires reducing sedimentary-water condition.A new series of mid dimethyl branched alkanes have been found to be rich in a lignite.They occur only as even carbon numbers which vary between C 26 and C 36 ,implying a special microorganism origin.The occurrences of mid mono-and dimethyl-branched alkanes in coals and mudstones,especially in coals may imply that some Lipid-rich organic matter can be formed in coal-forming environments and its micro-organism can be preserved and finally become an important constituent of the coals and mudstones.
