Review on magnetostratigraphic research of the quaternary loess-paleosol sequence in the Lantian basin

Much attention has been paid to the Cenozoic strata of the Lantian Basin abundant in mammalian fossils, particularly in loess strata of Gongwangling and Chenjiawo,where the fossil cranium and mandible of Lantian Man were found.It seems that the magnetostratigraphic research of Quaternary sediments in this area should be very easy on the basis of previous good work of the Quaternary loess on the Chinese Loess Plateau.But the incomplete sequence of Quaternary aeolian sediments in the Lantian Basin,largely due to its lying in the north piedmont of the Qinling Mountains and the complex tectonic geomorphology of this area,makes it difficult to date specific stratigraphic sections.Thus,the stratigraphic research of this area usually lacks absolute dating materials and methods. Therefore,investigations of typical stratigraphic sections with relatively complete loess-paleosol sequence,such as the Duanjiapo section and Weinan section,and reconstruction of the paleoclimate of this area with other proxy indicators, are very helpful to comparison and classification of the Quaternary strata in the Lantian basin,and thus of great importance to accurate dating of mammalian fauna fossils.
