Study on dynamic response of buried gas pipelines to seismic waves

Buried pipelines are the important lifeline of modern cities.When a major earthquake occurs,pipelines may be destroged,leading to gas leakage which can result in fire,explosion and other hazards.Therefore it is an urgent issue how to imporove the anti-seismic performance of buried pipelines.Considering relative displacement between the pipeline and soil in axial and radial directions,we use the quasi-static method to analyze dynamic response of the pipeline to seismic wares,and derive its strain and stress formulas.Calculation on a specific case shows that relative displacement between the pipeline and soil occurs mainly in axial direction.The interface locations are prone to damage,while the pipeline will be largely intact.The anti-seismic property of the pipeline can be enhanced by raising the foundation soil class and increasing cross-section area of the pipeline.Based on the result of calculation,we propose four anti-seismic measures which can provide guidance for design of pipeline anti-seismic work in cities.
