A study on three-dimension forward modeling and anomaly features of magnetotelluric sounding

We focus on the theory and method of three dimensional(3D) magnetotelluric(MT) forward modeling using integral equation in this paper,in order to implement a 3D fast and efficient MT forward modeling algorithm on PC.First,we have derived Fredholm integral equation completely and in great detail;then present the discrete strategy of the integral equation,the integral method for solving dyadic Green's function,and large matrix storage and solution method.Finally,our algorithm and the corresponding code developed in the paper are shown correct in calculation of a theoretical geoelectrical model.Numerical modeling for various models is presented and the anomaly features of the apparent resistivity are analyzed also.Our results show that the integral equation algorithm works for complicated model with multiple anomalous body on a PC computer with 1.81 GHz CPU and 1 GB memory.The near surface inhomogeneity results in great distortion on the apparent resistivity curve.The horizontal resolution of TE mode is better than TM mode comparatively,while vertical resolution of TM mode is better.With the increasing burial depths of anomalous body,the ability to detect it is reducing.
