Calculation and application of B-field for time-domain airborne EM

Traditional airborne electromagnetic(AEM)systems measure the response of the ground by using an induction coil,which in the time-domain outputs a voltage proportional to the magnetic induction dB/dt.Studies show that the magnetic induction dB/dt and the magnetic field Bhave different detectability to the underground conductors.In this paper,we develop an integration algorithm for calculating B from dB/dt and we check the accuracy of the algorithm by comparing the integrated B with the synthetic B(calculated by the Hankel's transform)for a half-space model. We also compare the resistivity imaging results respectively from dB/dt and B-field data for layered earth models.The comparison demonstrates that dB/dt is sensitive to resistive targets,but not so sensitive to good conductors.For deep conductors,the dB/dt response is quickly attenuated to the noise level,render it impossible to detect the targets. However,the B-field responses integrated from dB/dt suppress the noise.Even at the late time,B-field is still significantly above the noise level,so that it can well reflect the deep good conductors.Calculation of Bfrom dB/dt in this paper offers a possibility for airborne EM to detect the deep conductors.
