Numeric simulation of 0.2 m vertical-resolution dual laterolog tool

In the later period of oil field production,there has a strong demond for evaluation the thin layer with a thickness of 0.2 m.The vertical resolution of normal dual laterolog tools(DLL)is about 0.6~0.9m.It is difficult to match these DLL resistivity curves with other high-resolution logging curves.In this paper,a 2D finite element analysis method was used to optimize the DLL electrode system. The depths of investigation,vertical resolution,effects of layer thickness,open-hole diameter and mud resistivity on the tool response had been researched. Continuous resistivity curves were also calculated.The potential field and current distribution of synthetic-focusing DLL logging method had been simulated.The theoretical results and field tests show that the developed high-resolution DLL tool has a vertical resolution of 0.2 m.The results also show that the open-hole diameter and mud resistivity has has relatively high effect on the logging curves.These effects should be real-time corrected.
