IMF SECTOR EFFECT ON GEOMAGNETIC FIELD AT MID AND LOW LATITUDES

XU WEN-YAO SHI EN-QI(Institute of Geophysics, Academia Sinica, Beijing)
Geomagnetic data at Beijing and Guangzhou have been analysed by the use of eigenvalue method (or MNOC). The IMF sector effect on the geomagnetic field at mid and low latitudes have been recognized. The magnitude of the sector effect is about 3-5 nT at mid and low latitudes in contrast to tens nT at high latitudes. TheIMF sector effect is larger in equinoctial months (- 5 nT) than the winter (~3 nT). When the IMF is away from (or toward) the sun, the sector effect causes increase (or decrease) of H component at daytime and decrease (or increase) at night. The first eigenvector is used to estimate IMF sector polarities. The agreement of this estimate with satellite observations is~70% in summer and equinoctial months and less than 50% in winter, which implies the inverse sector effect in winter.
