LARGE-SCALE BENDING WAVES AND WAVY MAGNETODISC STRUCTURE OF THE JOVIAN MAGNETOSPHERE

In this paper, it is supposed that the wavy magnetodisc structure of the Jovian magnetosphere may be caused by large-scale bending waves in the Jovian plasma sheet. A self-consistent steady equilibrium model of the Jovian magnetodisc is developed, in which the radial plasma flow and azimuthal component of the magnetic field are included. Under some simplifications the dispersion relations and properties of these waves are discussed. It is found that bending waves can be identified as a new coupling waves batween the Alvèn waves and rotating waves. The dispersion relations and properties of these waves are associated with the configurationof the Jovian plasma sheet. The relevance of these waves to observations of the current sheet is discussed. It is found that the theoretical formula of the current sheet shape is consistent with experimental observation.
