Numerical simulation for radon migration in the homogeneous overburden

Radon can be transported from deep earth to ground surface and carry information reflecting the underground geological status. Based on the theory of convection and diffusion which play an important role in radon migration, this paper derived the 2-dimensional differential equation for radon concentration distribution, calculated the numerical solution for the infinite radon source layer, single and double abnormality radon source in the homogeneous overburden by making using the method of finite difference. The radon distributions in the homogeneous overburden were shown in 2-dimensional cross sections. The results were in agreement with the field measurements. These conclusions provided certain theoretic basis for interpreting the radon migration in overburden soil.
