18.6Years SEISMIC CYCLE AND THE PRELIMINARY EXPLORATION FOR ITS CAUSE

DU PIN-REN (Institute of Geology, State Seismological Bureau, Beijing 100029)  
Divlding the seismically most active parts over the world into 13 study regions and analysing statistically the correlations between large earthquakes(1897-1990)in each region and the 18.6a lunar nodal period, it has been found that the events in all major seismic regions have a significant 18.6a seismic cycle consisting of an active period of 12.4a and a quiet period of 6.2a. The author presents a new concept on magma tides in the asthenosphere and consider that the cause of the 18.6a seismic cycle is the modulating effect of the the magma tides. Such explaination is called hypothesis of the magma tides.The 18.6a quasi periodicity of the global volcanic activity and the regularity of the distribution of the central times of the seismic active periods are used as the evidence to support the hypothesis of magma tides. A seismic cycle can be understood as the process of response or self-organization in the whole world or a certain region to the nonlinear interactions between internal and external factors of the earth.
