EFFECT OF LITHOLOGIC CHARACTER,PETROLEUM AND EFFECTIVE OVERBURDEN PRESSURE ON COMPRESSIONAL WAVE AND SHEAR

WAVE VELOCITYSHEN LIAN-DI(Research Institute of the Science of Petroleum exploration and Development, Beijing 100083) SHI GE(Department of Geology, Peking University, Beijing 100871)  
Facing to the difficulty of oil and gas exploration and development in complex rock properties of continental strata, eight typical samples with different litholgic characters are collected from representative reservoir which consist of sandstone and conglomerate of positive rhythm. Compressional and shear velocities(Vp,Vs) variation curves with different overburden pressure (ΔP) under five states fully saturated separately with water (Sw, 100%), oil (So,100%), gas(SG, 0), irreducible water and residual oil are measured.The results of study suggest that: (1)P-wave and S-wave velocity always varies as an increasing expontential function of the pressure of overlying strata; variation of Vp and VS with ΔP at lowpressure are even more sensitive than under high-pressure; variation of Vp with ΔP is more sensitive than Vs.(2) Under same saturated State,ranges of Vp-ΔP and Vs-ΔP Curves are controlled by lithological variation in same non-uniform single layer.When variation of rock grain composition is from fine grain sandstone to coarse grain sandstone, the variation of Vp-ΔP curve is from low to high.Vp-ΔP curve of gravel-bearing or calcium-bearing sandstone is at superior limit of curves, Vp-ΔP curve of pebble grit sandstone is lower than gravel-bearing sandstone. Vs-ΔP curves have same regularity. (3) In same sample,under five different saturated states, velocity varies as linear function of saturation under low or highpressure. (4) In same non-uniform Single layer, Vp-ΔP curves with different state have evident zones (divided into four zones). Variation of Vp in gas-saturated is more sensitive than in oil or water-saturated. Variation of Vp With ΔP is more sensitive than Vs in gas-saturated.
