STUDY OF THE 16 SEPTEMBER 1994 TAIWAN STRAIT EARTHQUAKE AND ITSTECTONEC SETTING

In this paper we give a detailed study of the 16 September 1994 TaiwanStrait earthquake using the broadband P-wave waveform inversion.A hybridglobal inversion method was used to derive the best-fitting solution of the seismicmoment tensor.The random weighting method was applied to estimate the errorin the best solution.The inversion result shows that this earthquake is a normaldip-slip event with a horizontal tension axis in SN direction and a vertical comression axis.The faulting planes have EW strike.The source time functionindicats a duration of 4s,and a singural uniform faulting process.The origin ofthe horizontal tension stress-pattern in the epicentral region are disscused.
