IONOSPHERIC DRIFT PROPERTIES AND ITS RESPONSE TO THE IMF CONDITIONS AT ZHONGSHAN STATION,ANTARCTICA

The ionospheric drift observations obtained by the Digisonde Potable Sounder(DPS-4)at the Chinese Antarctic Station zhongshan in l995 are investigated. Thestatistical analysis reveals main features of the ionospheric drift. The ionosphericmovements in cusp region latitude are mainly horizontal, and show an averageddiurnal variation pattern.The ionosphere drifts ate towards magnetic south pole around local noon and away from it at night which coincides with the antisunward convectionpattern. Date analysis shows that the convection pattem is largely controlled by theazimuth component of IMF By. When By 0, the horizontal velocities at CGLT zeroo'clock incline to the west and the entrance points towards the south are located between CGLT 7 and 8 o' clock. When By0, the horizontal velocities at CGLTzero o' clock incline to the east and the entrance points are located between CGLT 9to 10o' clock. The convection patterns in the southern hemisphere are basically themirror images of those in the northern hemisphere.
