BAROCLINIC INERTIAL INSTABILITY IN THE NON-STATIC EQUILIBRIUM ATMOSPHERE

In this paper the stability of two-dimensional symmetric perturbations to a non-static stratified basic flow with vertical and horizontal shear is investigated. For a linear sheared basic flow the whole space in itial-value problem is solved, from which the instability criterion and preferential growth direction are deduced. For the nonlinear sheared basic flow similar results are derived from the generalized energy equation. The influence of viscosity and boundaries is analyzed and some inferences about mesoscale severe convection are discussed.
