Analysis on household iodized salt in Guangdong province in 2002

Objective To explore the quality of iodized salt in residents' hom e in Guangdong province.Methods IDD monitor was carried out according to the "P lan of the Fourth National IDD Monitor Project" issued by Ministry of Health,PRC .Results The median of salt iodine was 33.4 mg/kg,the consumption rate of qualif ied iodized salt were 88.6%and 92.4%respectively.90%families consumed qualifi ed iodized salt in 16 cities,which comprised 76.2%areas in Guangdong.The differ ence of qualified rate between types of iodized salt was significant (P 0.01).I t was significantly higher in refined salt than in granule salt and sea salt.The rate of qualified iodized salt in severe and moderate iodine deficiency area wa s significantly higher than in mild and non-iodine deficiency area.Conclusions Iodized salt supply and quality were basically stable after the stage goal of el imination of IDD had been achieved in Guangdong province by 2000.Illegal non-io dized salt market in Guangdong coastal areas and the pearl river Delta and the o ver-dose of salt iodine in some areas must be controlled.
