Effect of different iodine ingestion on children's intelligence and thyroid function

JIA Qing-zhen,ZHANG Xiang-dong,GUO Bai-suo,et al(The Shanxi Institute for Endemic Disease Prevention and Treatment,Linfen 041000,China)
Objective To explore the effect of high iodine on human by investigating children's intelligence and thyroid function of different iodine concentration in drinking water in Pingyao County. Methods The iodine concentration in water, urine and salt were tested according to national standard methods.Children's intelligence was obtained by Combined Raven's Test(CRT-C2).Goiter was examined by palpation TT4,TSH in blood serum were determined according to the Chemilumineseentimmunoassay(CLIA).Results The iodine concentration in well water was 28.7 μg/L in Haokai village, was 147.5 μg/L in Haojiabu, and were 1 476.6 μg/L,997.3 μg/L and 802.6 μg/L in Zuojiabu(3 wells),respectively. The median urinary iodine was 237.9 μg/L,357.8 μg/L,1 362.7 μg/L,respectively.The mean salt iodine was 24.86 mg/kg,28.28 mg/kg and 1.96 mg/kg,respectively.The mean intelligence quotient(IQ) was 100.1,108.2,105.5,respectively.The mean TSH was 2.88 MIU/L,3.63 MIU/L,4.82 MIU/L by CLIA,respectively. Conclusions Different iodine ingestion can bring different effects on children's IQ and thyroid function.High iodine can not damages children's IQ,but lead goiter and a rise in TSH level.
