A Survey on iodine nutrition status of key population in historical iodine deficiency areas,Guangxi

Objective Evaluation on iodine intake and iodine nutrition status of children and pregnant women in various types of iodine deficiency areas after standard decreased for salt iodine addition third time in Guangxi to find that there may be iodine deficiency risk,to take appropriate iodine deficiency strategy to eliminate the harm of iodine deficiency. Methods Using stratified sampling method,extracted two counties in slight,medium,serious areas respectively( a total of 6 counties).Investigate iodine content of residents' drinking water,children's thyroid volume,salt iodine,urinary iodine,pregnant women's salt iodine,urinary iodine in each county.Results The thyroid gland of 302 children were examined,the rate of goiter was 0.33%.Median iodized salt of children was 24.34 mg/kg,non-iodized salt was 2,the rate of non-iodized salt was 0. 66%. Median urinary iodine( MUI) of children was 185.70 μg/L,MUI in slight,medium,serious areas were 161.54 μg/L,161.93 μg/L,231.10 μg/L respectively,all in an appropriate state.480 pregnant women were examined,MUI was 141.90 μg/L( range: 3.10 ~ 602.00 μg/L); MUI of slight,medium,serious areas were 155.65 μg/L,139.35 μg/L,126.10 μg/L respectively. Only mild areas reach the appropriate standard,pregnant women in medium and serious areas is poor.271 drinking water samples were detected in three kinds of iodine deficiency disorders( IDD) areas.Median water iodine was 3.8 μg/L.Conclusion New iodized salt added standard is fitting to children and the general population in different IDD areas,but the pregnant women were iodine nutrition deficiency in medium,serious areas,where the water iodine is poor.There is the population who have a high risk of iodine deficiency.
