Role of Insulin-like Growth Factors in the Growth and Development of Embryo and Fetus

In recent years compelling evidences support a role for insulin like growth factors (IGFs) in the growth and development of embryo and fetus.IGFs now appear to be synthesized in many tissues,and their receptors are ubiquitous in the tissues of embryo and fetus.The principal actions of IGFS appear to be exerted locally at or near their sites of synthesis,and a great amount of studies have demonstrated that IGFs stimulate proliferation and differentiation of many cell types.Because IGFs show the high concentrations in the blood of embryo and fetus,the insulin like metabolic effects of IGFs have been proposed.Besides of direct actions on embryo and fetus,IGFs also influence the growth and development of embryo and fetus through their actions on placenta.This review summarizes the role of IGFs in the embryo and fetus.
