Peripartum period is a time when common diseases and contagious diseases of ruminants often take place, and its most prominent pathological feature is the negative energy balance(NEB).The liver is the major organ for energy metabolism, and thus the collection of liver samples is of particularly importance for the diagnosis and study of pathogenesis of perinatal diseases. In the present study, needle biopsy was employed for liver tissue sampling in peripartum goats.Standard operation of needle puncture was applied to 9peripartum goats, and 70 times of biopsy were accomplished in total. Results showed that liver samples were taken successfully during each puncture with mortality rate and abortion rate both at 0%.Blood routine test and liver function test suggested no significant difference before and after biopsy. Those data indicated that needle biopsy was a reliable and safe method for collection of liver samples in peripartum goats, and would facilitate the research of perinatal diseases in ruminants.
