In order to investigate the infections of Enterococcus faeciumin chicks,we chose clinically suspected cases for anatomical and histopathological observation, isolated the pathogen from lesions of the liver and identified it based on morphology,16 SrRNA sequence and PCR analysis for the specific fragment. As a result, the isolate formed round small colonies in nutrient agar medium and manifested as Gram-positive cocci under the microscope;16 SrRNA sequence of the isolates was 99.6%-98.7% similar compared with that of E.faecium, and less than 97% with other strains. The target bands were shown in the electrophoretic result of PCR products for the specific fragment of E.faecium.Histopathological test showed hepatomegaly, bleeding and loose cytoplasm in the liver.Pathogenic test with the identified isolate reproduced the symptoms of the clinical cases.Combining researches of morphology and molecular biology,we determined the isolates as E.faecium.According to histopathological and pathogenic tests, the sick chicks were infected with E.faecium.
