An energy management system for supercapacitor groups

The cycling life and output power of supercapacitors in series will degrade because of the voltage differences among individual cells. For alleviating this problem, a new voltage equalization method of switch network equilibrium method was proposed. In the equilibrium process of this method, energy can be directly transferred from the supercapacitor with the highest voltage to the one with the lowest voltage by turning on/off of the switch without intermediate temporary storage devices. In addition, the principle of voltage equalization circuit and equalization process were also investigated. Finally, simulation analysis and verification for the three supercapacitors in series via the combination of PSIM software and FPGA were conducted. The obtained results demonstrate that the proposed method has good equalization effect.
