An efficient arm removal algorithm based on straight line detection

In this paper, an arm removal algorithm based on straight line detection is presented. In the research of static hand gesture recognition, the hand gesture region, which is obtained by background removal and skin color segmentation, usually contains redundant arms, then it will result in the poor gesture recognition accuracy. Therefore, this paper adopts probability Hough transform method to detect all possible straight lines of the contour map which contains hand gesture firstly. The detected straight line segments may contain wrong segments on the both sides of the palms and the fingers. To obtain only the straight line segments on both sides of the arm, two filtrate methods based on structural characteristics of these straight line segments is proposed. Then the cutting-line can be designed to incise hand gesture area iteratively to remove the forearm part effectively, leaving the region which only contains the palm and fingers. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm, this paper collects 12 common gestures and use a hierarchical recognition method based on HOG feature to implement gesture recognition experiment.
