Fault Structures in the Eastern Depression of the North Yellow Sea Basin

Fault structures in the North Yellow Sea Basin are extremely developed and very complex,which affect significantly the tectonic and sedimentary evolution as well as hydrocarbon accumulation of the basin.According to the detailed structure interpretation of the latest 3Dseismic data of the Eastern Depression in this basin,this paper studies the types,characteristics and evolution of fault structures systematically.Based on the kinematic characteristics,fault structure types can be divided into normal faults,reverse faults,twisting faults and inversion faults;According to the level and scale of the faults,they can be classified into the five-level faults.The trending of these faults in plane mainly includes north-western,north-eastern,approximately north-southern and east-western.Combination styles in plane include parallel type,oblique-contact type,the echelon and inclined column type.Fault forms in sections include plough type,seat type,slope flat type,straight type,etc.In seismic sections,they develop stretching properties of graben,horst, " Y" glyph,reverse " Y" glyph,complex " Y" glyph,synthetic fault terrace,antithetic fault terrace, " conjugate" shaped,broom,comb,dendritic,pinnate,approximately flowerstructure,and half flower-structure and imbricate with pressing properties.The fault activities during Mesozoic-Cenozoic can be mainly classified into six geological periods:1Middle Jurassic to Late Jurassic with extensional activities,2Late Jurassic with compression and inversion activities,3Early Cretaceous with weak extensional activities,4Eocene to Early Oligocene with extensional activities,5Late Oligocene with extensional activities,and6 Neogene with weak extensional activities.During the Mesozoic-Cenozoic,the tectonic evolution of the Eastern Depression in the North Yellow Sea Basin experienced several tectonic cycles of extension-compression and inversion(uplift),and so the various activities of faults in the Eastern Depression are the results of the control actions of the surrounding plates' movements and the geological process in depth.
