THE DISCOVERY OF FOSSIL DNA,ITS GEOLOGICAL BACKGROUND AND EVOLUTIONARY SIGNIFICANCE

The fossil DNA found in Clarkia Miocene leaf chloroplast is the oldest genetic material so far.The preservation of in- tact fossil DNA is due to the unique taphonomic conditions in Clarkia locality.The taphofacies in Clarkia P—33 is char- acterized by a low broken ratio,fine articulation,original color,and ultrastructureal states.The high taphonomic grade is due to the unique geological background as well as paleoclimatic and paleoliminological conditions.The study of fossil DNA contributes significant ideas in evolutionary rate and provides independent testing on many evolutionary theories.
