PRELIMINARY INVESTIGATION ON ORE-FORMING FACTORS IN CHROME-BEARING ULTRABASIC ROCKS IN XINJIANG

The chrome-bearing ultrabasic rocks described in the present paper can be divided into the following types: dunite-clinopyroxene-peridotite complex, dunite-harzburgite, harzburgite, harzburgite-peridotite and ultrabasic rocks with feldspar. The various rock masses differ in the degrees of mineralization, but the chromite deposits of indnstrial value occur mainly in the former three. The abyssal differentiation of ultrabasic magmas is closely associated with element concentration and ore formation, while the nature and size of deep-seated faults affect the feeding and repeated intrusions of the magmas. The practical data indicate that the internal structures of the rock masses are important factors influencing the localization and distribution of the ore-bodies. The migration and stagnancy of ore-bearing melts are controlled by both the laws of hydro mechanics and the primary fissures of the masses. Consequently, the ore-bodies are largely distributed in the localities where the masses change morphologically from narrow to wide and from steep to gentle, and in the "troughs" on the footwalls (margins) of the masses. The indicators for comparatively high percentage of chrome in the ultrabasie rocks are: (1) quite high content of Cr_2O_3 (more than 4%), (2)good abyssal magmatic differentiation and distinct repeated intrusions, (3) distinct internal structures, and (4) development of late-stage co,ornate vein rocks.
