The Formation and Function of the Specific Spherocrystals of Calcium Salts in the Midgut Tissues of Fluorosis Silkworm Larvae Bombyx mori

The specific spherocrystals of calcium salts with numerous concentric layers were observed in the midgut cells of fluorosis silkworm larvae Bombyx mori by means of in situ precipitation with an improved potassium pyruantimonate technique and electron microscopy. It was also found that the structure and number of the spherocrystals were changed as the increase of fluoride concentration in the ingested mulberry leaves, which was believed to be related to the detoxification of fluoride in the midgut cells of silkworm larvae.
