Applications of EBSD in measuring the grain size of magnesium alloy

The line interception method in optical microscope and EBSD automation analytical method in SEM were used to characterize the grain sizes of annealed AZ31 magnesium alloys. Due to the problems in sample preparation and the limited resolution of optical microscope, some grains are often obscure in micrographs and can not be identified. In contrast to optical microscope, the grain boundaries in EBSD maps can be clearly, quickly and automatically identified. Hence, the line intercept method in optical microscope and EBSD automation method were compared in measuring the grain size of magnesium alloy. It was shown that caution must be taken in processing EBSD data to obtain meaningful results. Moreover, the negative effects of noise and artificial symmetry in characterizations of grain size by EBSD were briefly discussed in this study.
