Failure analysis of a stainless steel component using the EBSD technique

The EBSD technique has been applied in combination with metallography and EDS analysis to investigate the pitting corrosion of a stainless steel rack component. EBSD has been used to study the local strains and textural changes across the cross section near the pitting corrosion area. It has been shown that the changes in texture and strain caused in the sheet folding process of the sample under investigation clearly produce planes of lower packing density on the inside of the fold, it is hence inferred that the pitting observed on the inside of the fold of the rack is due to a combination of texture changes and strain levels caused by the folding process.
