Hydromagnetic Instability of Cylindrical Sheet Plasma

The stability of the cylindrical sheet plasma with surface currents obtainable from a dis- charge through the tubular space between two cylindrical conducting jackets constitut- ing the return paths of the discharge currents is investigated hydromagnetically by the method of normal modes.A disperson relation is obtained which correctly reduces to those already known for the customary case of the linear pinch.It is found that the sausage mode remains completely unstable,but with growth rate reduced,and that the m=1 mode now, like the other higher modes,also possesses a region of stability extending from zero wave number up to a critical value of kr_(20),depending on the ratio of the outer radii,R_2 and r_(20),of the conducting envelope and the plasma.Calculations of growth rates of the sausage instabilities suggest that the neutron production thus far observed by Anderson et al in their Triax may still be due to this type of instability.
