Polarographic Determination of Scandium

The stability constant of Sc~—edta complex is 10~4 times larger than that of Pb~—edta,pb~ ion can therefore be displaced out from pb~—edta complex by Sc~ ion.By adding small quantity of Sc~ ion to a solution con- taining equivalent amounts of pb~ ion and edta,the displaced pb~ ion then determined by polarographic method,the amount of Scandium can be estimated.Other metallic ions in the sample,the edta complex stability constants of which are smaller than that of pb~—edta are not interfering with the determination of Scandium,and therefore need no separation.Those ions with larger or nearly equal edta stability constants must be separated from Sc~ ion before determination. Experiments were made under different pH values and the influences of different interfering ions were examined.This method was applied to the determination of Scandium in tungstun ores.
