Amelioration Effects of Different Salt-tolerant Shrub-herb Communities on Saline Soil in Coastal Reclaimed Zone of East Beach of Chongming Island

The amelioration effects of different salt-tolerant shrub-herb communities on saline soil in a coastal reclaimed zone in the Yangtze estuary were investigated.In the reclaimed zone of east beach of Chongming Island in 1998,six salt-tolerant shrub-herb communities which had been planted more than eight years were taken as the treatment plots,while the bare land was taken as the control plot.In reclaimed coastal zone in 1998,soil total organic carbon,total phosphorus,and field moisture capacity are pretty low,while mineral nitrogen is severely low.The amelioration effects of the 6 salt-tolerant shrub-herb communities on soil total organic carbon,total nitrogen,available phosphorus,pH value,total dissolved salt,density,porosity,field moisture capacity,and texture are apparent.SSIalso showed obvious effects of six salt-tolerant shrub-herb communities on saline soil in the reclaimed zone.The averaged amelioration effect of the six communities is 59.5 %.The separate amelioration effects of the six communities are:Senna corymbosa(+63.2%)Amorpha fruticosa(+62.9%)Trifolium repens(+60.3%)Hibiscus hamabo +Vicia sepium(+60.0%)Nerium indicum+Vicia sepium(+58.6%)Bambusa multiplex + Medicago polymorpha(+51.9%).The amelioration effects of the former two communities are higher at the soil layer of 20-40 cm,while those of the latter four communities are higher at the soil layer of 10-20 cm.On the whole,the amelioration effects of Senna corymbosaand Amorphafruticosacommunities on saline soil are more marked,and they are more suitable for ameliorating saline soil in the reclaimed coastal zone in the Yangtze estuary.
