Hydrophobicity and Characterization of Dichlorobenzene-degrading Bacterial Strain

Two strains named DEB-2 and DEB-3 that degraded dichlorobenzene as sole carbon and energy source were isolated from activated sludge of a chemical plant.They were identified as Pseudomonas and Bacillus according to the morphology and biochemical properties.Surface hydrophobicity of the two strains and their changes under different environmental conditions were studied based on cell amount of bacteria in organic water two-phase system.The degradation of different initial concentrations of dichlorobenzene by DEB-2 and DEB-3 were carried out in solution.Results showed that hydrophobicity changed with the change of cultivation time,temperature and pH value.The hydrophobicity of the two strains were related definitely with the degradation of organic pollutant in water environment,with the degradation capability of hydrophobic organics by the strain DEB-2 of high hydrophobicity stronger than that by the strain DEB-3 of low hydrophobicity.
