Removal of COD in Paper-making Wastewater by Algae

Removal efficiency of COD by various algae in a straw-based paper-making wastewater was investigated.The algae included Green Algae such as Scenedesmus obliqnus 416,Chlamydomonas microsphaella 52,Chlamydomonas reinhardi 479,Chlorella vulgaris Beij 31,Chlorella phyrenoidosa 9,Pandorina morum 463,Eudorina sp.331,diatom including Cyclotella meneghiniana kutz 1031 and Navicula incerta as well as Euglena intermedia var.412,Euglena gracilis klebs 848 and Chaetoceros muelleri 862.After 18 days incubation,the degradation by C.meneghiniana kutz 1031 and N.incerta were the best,with removal efficiency up to 87.09% and 88.18% respectively.Different initial concentrations of algae were compared,and 106cells/mL was found as the best for the removal efficiency of COD.Results indicated that algae,especially diatom may be a useful organism in the degradation of COD in paper-making wastewater.
