Preparation and Dispersity of Nanoiron Particles Coated with Carboxymethyl Cellulose

High reactivity and small size make nanoiron highly flexible for in situ remediation of chlorinated hydrocarbons in groundwater. For the purpose of in situ remediation,nanoiron must be readily dispersible in water. Carboxymethyl cellulose coated nanoiron particles was synthesized by reduction of ferrous sulfate with sodium borohydride in aqueous phase at the presence of carboxymethyl cellulose. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observation showed that the diameter of 64.2wt% carboxymethyl cellulose coated nanoiron particles was about 20nm,while bare nanoiron was 50~100nm. Carboxymethyl cellulose coated nanoiron particles was more discrete than bare nanoiron. Fourier transform infrared (FT -IR) spectroscopy demonstrated that carboxymethyl cellulose molecules were adsorbed to the surface of nanoiron particles through monodentate coordinating. The sedimentation curves of carboxymethyl cellulose coated nanoiron particles in 1mmol/L NaHCO3 aqueous solution were straight lines with slope of -10-4~10-5s-1,indicating greater dispersity than bare nanoiron.
