Effects of Thermo-technology on Enhanced Volatile Fatty Acids Production of Wasted Activated Sludge By Acid Or Alkaline Pretreatments

Plenty of organics were existed in excess activated sludge which mainly contained protein and polysaccharides.In this study,four pretreatments including: acid,alkaline,thermo-acid,and thermo-alkaline technologies were applied to enhance the volatile fatty acids(VFAs) production,and investigated the effects of thermo-technology on acid or alkaline pre treatments.The results revealed that the thermo-alkaline pretreatment obviously promoted the SCOD and the maximum reached 15 364.8 mg/L,and the alkaline pretreatment was the second,and the thermo-acid and the acid pretreatments were at the last.The same changes were obtained in soluble protein and polysaccharides,the protein and polysaccharides reached the maximum of 3 474.9 mg/L and 731.4 mg/L after thermo-alkaline pretreatment,respectively.The results of VFAs production revealed that the acid pretreatment influenced the VFAs production even if the thermo technology was applied,and the best pretreatment was thermo-alkaline technology,and the maximum VFAs production was 4 783.5 mg/L.
