Application of Microwave Technology to Treatment of Some Typical Solid Waste:A Review

Microwave(MW) technology is better than conventional heating technology in terms of rapid and selective heating with locally high temperature,and cutting hazardous products formation and emission,so attention has been drawn to its potential application to environmental pollutants treatment with respect to those such as sterilization,organic/inorganic syntheses,polymerization and dehydration,as well as the environment monitoring,e.g.analysis and extraction.This paper overviewed the principle of MW and its use in treatment of waste materials,such as stabilization of metal ions in sewage sludge,decontamination of organic compounds in soils and sintering of fly ash,introducing the techniques of addition of aluminum powder,iron powder,activated carbon and Al_2O_3 to sewage sludge,contaminated soil and fly ash as a kind of microwave absorber which played a role to promote the immobilization of heavy metals and thermal decomposition of organic compounds.Furthermore,the mechanism of the combined effect of microwave and activated carbon in soil decontamination of organic compounds was elucidated;the significant potential of MW technology to be employed in the treatment of some typical solid pollution waste in full-scale was prospected;and problems regarding the proportion enlargement and design of microwave heating equipment were discussed as well.
