Effects of Fiber Ball on Tilapia and Its Aquaculture Environment

Fiber balls were used as attachment carriers for indigenous microorganisms to study their effects on water quality,the growth of tilapia and microbial community functional diversity in tilapia culture water. The results showed that the fiber balls could affect the water quality by increasing the concentrations of DO and IC, and by decreasing the concentration of ni-trate and p H values in these aquaculture systems, but there was no significant effect on TOC, nitrite and nitrate in water. Be-sides, the fiber balls could significantly increase the tilapia weight gain and reduce the feed coefficients. And with the suspen-sion density increasing, the feed coefficients decreased. Moreover, the fiber balls can significantly improve the use of water microbial Biolog-ECO plate in all the carbon source strength, and improve the metabolic activity of water microorganisms to carbon sources such as D-glucosamine acid, D-galacturonic acid and D-mannitol. Nevertheless, the fiber balls had no significant effect on the alpha diversity of microorganisms presented by Shannon, Simpson, Mc Intosh and richness indices in these aquaculture systems. Furtherly, PCA analysis showed that the differences of microbial community functional diversity between the treated group and the control group in these systems. To sum up, the fiber balls could effectively improve the water quali-ty and promote the growth of tilapia. Besides, they could affect the microbial community functional diversity.
