The Application of Ti(Ⅳ) Modified Granular Activated Carbon for Defluorination from Aqueous Solution

In this study, Ti(Ⅳ) modified granular activated carbon(Ti(Ⅳ)-GAC) is prepared and tested for fluoride removal from aqueous solution. Batch experiments are performed to investigate the equilibrium, kinetics and mechanism. The results show that the fluoride adsorption process follows the Langmuir isotherm and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Fluoride adsorption is enhanced as the initial fluoride concentration and contact time increased. Alkaline p H and elevated solution tem-perature do not favor the adsorption of fluoride. Anion exchange between the fluoride ions and the hydroxyl groups of the ad-sorbents is the major adsorption mechanism. Batch experiments demonstrate that the Ti( Ⅳ)-GAC adsorbent can effectively remove the aqueous fluoride with a high efficiency, and bring down the fluoride concentration lower than the permissible limit of fluoride in drinking water in China(1.0 mg/L). Experiments also show that the Ti( Ⅳ)-GAC material has favorable regenerability, and can be used a versatile adsorbent for treating mixed contamination of fluoride and organic pollutants.
