Treatment of Polluted Water with a High Concentration of Manganese Ion from Manganese Area

KMn O4 preoxidation and coagulation was used to remove 10 mg/L Mn~(2+)in asynthetic polluted water from manganese area.The effects of KMn O4 dosage, preoxidation time, coagulant type and dosage, and hydraulic condition on Mn~(2+)removal were investigated,and the optimum operational conditions were obtained. 99.9 % Mn~(2+)could be removed under the optimum operational conditions. 15 mg/L KMnO_4 is enough to remove 10 mg/L Mn~(2+), which was only 78.3% of the theoretical dosage for KMn O4 since some of Mn~(2+)could be adsorbed by the in situ formed MnO_2. The Mn~(2+)concentration was less than 0.1 mg/L in the condition of the KMn O4 dosed as the 78.3% of theoretical dosage when the initial concentration of Mn~(2+)varied from 4 mg/L to 14 mg/L.The p H of solution had no effect on the removal of Mn~(2+)and turbidity when the p H of solution was ranged from 6 to 8.5. The turbidity of synthetic water after treated could be less than 1.5 NTU when the initial turbidity varied from 0 to 50 NTU. Experiments results showed that this method could also be efficient in remove high concentration of manganese ion in natural contaminated water from manganese area.
