Spatiotemporal Variations Characteristics of Summer Heat Island Effect in Shenyang Over the Past 15 Years

In order to reveal the spatiotemporal variations regularity of summer land surface thermal environment and the basic characteristics of heat island effect in Shenyang from 2002-2016, Two datasets, i.e., Moderate Resolution Imaging Radiometer(MODIS) Land surface temperature(LST)(MOD11 A2) and Normalization Difference Vegetation Index(NDVI)(MOD13 A3) were employed in this study to analyze LST temporal and spatial distribution and the relationship between LST and NDVI at the scales of different political districts and spatial pixels. The results were as follows:(1) LST increased in political districts of Shenyang with the exception of the district of Kangping county.(2)In this region, construction land and hardening of the pavement were widely distributed, and the vegetation coverage was low, therefore the central urban area became the main thermal source of Shenyang.(3) Pixels with increasing trends(LST trend 0) accounted for 61% of the study area, which were mostly found across Shenyang.(4)The strong heat island areas were mainly distributed in the central urban area, build-up area of Xinmin city and Liaozhong county. The lowest temperature zones were mainly distributed in the water and lower vegetation areas. There was a negative correlation between LST and NDVI in the space. Considering the heat island intensity and the relationship between LST and NDVI, water and vegetation performed a distinct role in remitting the thermal environmental conditions. Our research could provide reference for urban ecological planning and land use reasonable arrangement.
